What We Do
Visiting women in prison, The Fire Inside newsletter, annual protests, advocacy, education and outreach, and support for former prisoners.
CCWP’s Newsletter: The Fire Inside
The Fire Inside is a quarterly publication with a circulation of over 2,000 that is dedicated to providing a space for women prisoners and their supporters to communicate with each other and the broader public about the issues and experiences women prisoners face through articles, art and poetry.
Free Battered Women
Free Battered Women engages in creative solutions to addressing the particular needs of incarcerated survivors of domestic violence as part of the struggle to combat all forms of violence against women.
Freedom Bound
The Freedom Bound Women's Support Group/workshop is a space for formerly incarcerated women to talk about common issues and support each other. Freedom Bound also provides support to women leaving prison and re-entering communities in California with resources and information. We encourage participants to become active in support of political rights and needs of former and current women prisoners.
Prison Visits
CCWP regularly visits women at Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, California. The visits enable us to:
- Break down the prison walls and rebuild relationships with women prisoners based on mutual respect and trust.
- Provide support to women prisoners regarding conditions of confinement, health issues, abuse, etc. through advocacy and organizing.
- Develop peer education trainings in collaboration with women prisoners to support their ability to support themselves and each other within prison.
Public Education & Outreach
CCWP sees public education regarding issues facing women in prison as central to our ability to build a strong community and prison-based organizing efforts to stop the abuse of women in prison, and increase public dialogue regarding alternatives to incarceration. CCWP offers trainings on women’s prison issues at speaking events, trainings, schools, conference workshops, etc. We also provide trainings to community members interested in developing training or speaking skills.
Prisoner Letters
CCWP provides support to hundreds of prisoners throughout California and the U.S. by providing information and resource referrals.
