What We Do

The Fire Inside Newsletter, Free Battered Women, Companeras, Prison Visits, Political Education & Organizing, Prisoner Letters

CCWP’s Newsletter: The Fire Inside

The Fire Inside is a quarterly publication with a circulation of over 2,500 that is dedicated to providing a space for women, transgender & gender non-conforming prisoners and their supporters to communicate with each other and the public about the issues and experiences they face through articles, art and poetry.

Free Battered Women

Free Battered Women seeks to end the re-victimization of incarcerated survivors of domestic violence as part of the movement for racial justice and the struggle to resist all forms of intimate partner violence against women and transgender people. We achieve this through community organizing, parole advocacy, public education, media campaigns, and policy work.

Companeras

Companeras is a program working with Latina immigrant women, transgender & gender non-conforming prisoners to build a movement to gain full human rights & end the criminalization and exploitation of immigrants & immigrant prisoners. Companeras employs a variety of strategies & tactics, including building collaborations between the prison reform movement and immigrant rights organizations and publishing the newsletter "Realidad de Inmigrantes en Prison" / "Reality of Immigrants in Prison."

Prison Visits

CCWP regularly visits prisoners at Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, California. We also visit prisoners at California Institution for Women in Corona, California. The visits enable us to: - Break down the prison walls and build relationships based on mutual respect and trust. - Provide support around conditions of confinement, health issues, abuse, etc. through advocacy and organizing. - Work collaboratively on campaigns and organizing efforts.

Political Education & Organizing

CCWP sees leadership development & political education as central to building strong community & prisoner-based organizing efforts to stop the abuse & targeting of women, transgender & gender non-conforming people by prison institutions & the larger criminal justice system. CCWP's organizing model relies on member leaders inside & outside of prisons working closely to build & run our campaigns.

Prisoner Letters

CCWP provides support to hundreds of prisoners throughout California and the U.S. by providing information and resource referrals.
