Sherrie Chapman PRESENTE!

Sherrie ChapmanIt is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Sherrie Chapman. Sherrie, who was incarcerated for more than 20 years, lost her battle against the cancer that ravaged her body and died on December 12, 2002.

While incarcerated at CIW, Sherrie successfully sued the Dept. of Corrections and the doctor who failed to provide Sherrie with appropriate medical care and treatment of breast lumps which proved to be cancerous. Sherrie's case was settled in 2000, and Sherrie was awarded $350,000 in damages.

Sherrie was an inspiration to all of us. We will miss her spirit and her advocacy for other women at CIW who face the daily struggle of obtaining appropriate and compassionate medical care.

Our condolences to all who knew her. Our thoughts are especially with Ossie (Sherrie's mother) and her brothers Sam and Ron.
