Dedication to Twillah Wallace

Twillah WallaceThis issue of The Fire Inside is dedicated to the memory of Twillah Wallace who died on October 8, 2001. Twillah was one of six women, including Joanne Walker, who organized the first HIV peer education program for women prisoners in California. She was featured in "Blind Eye to Justice."

Twillah was a long-term AIDS/HIV survivor. She served many years in and out of prison, and always struggled for better conditions for all prisoners, especially those with serious illnesses. She also had a terrific sense of humor and managed to put her own problems and those of others into a world-wide perspective.

Twillah struggled to stay alive until her release from prison. She died in a hospice outside of the prison walls, having completed her sentence. For that we can all be thankful.
