New organization to help women prisoners

by Diana Block

Justice Now is a new Oakland-based organization that provides direct legal services to women prisoners in California state prisons. The Co-Directors of Justice Now are Cynthia Chandler, formerly the director of Women's PLAN, and Cassandra Shaylor, formerly a staff attorney with Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. Justice Now trains law students to assist women prisoners with medical advocacy, compassionate release, alternative sentencing and child custody matters. Through this work we hope to greatly increase the services available to women inside. We will be moving to a new location soon, and we will take new clients beginning in January.
