Rattle the Cage

by Amy Weaver

Rattle the Cage rocked the house! This June 28th benefit for the CCWP was put together by the musical collective FolkDiva at Ashkenaz, a funky performance space and dance club in Berkeley. The evening was a huge success, with lots of great music, political passion and high energy spoken word by our favorite diva, Aya DeLeon. The diverse standing-room only crowd spilled out the door, enjoying bands like Rebecca Riots (who urged the crowd to "form a human chain around prisons so that they can't put more people in"), and CopperWimmin, a powerful acappella trio with an empowering message for all women to be strong and to feel beautiful. Several of the musicians had performed at women's prisons and shared their experiences. Members of CCWP encouraged the audience to make their voices heard in the fight for better health care and living conditions for all women prisoners. Ida McCray of Families With A Future (and a former prisoner) roused the crowd with her testimony of what it's like to be behind bars and to know that women on the outside care enough to do something. It was definitely an unforgettable evening.
