Habeas bill extended

This month, Gov. Davis signed an extension to Penal Code § 1473.5, which allows survivors of domestic violence who were convicted of killing their batterers before 1992 to file petitions for writs of habeas corpus to challenge their imprisonment. The extension allows women extra time to file their petitions until 2010. This law gives incarcerated survivors who qualify a rare chance to have their convictions overturned and/or have their sentences reduced.
For more information about the Habeas Project, contact Free Battered Women at 1540 Market St., #490, San Francisco, CA 94102.
