Vote NO on Propositions 9 and 6!Taking the lead from our members inside, CCWP is urging people to vote NO on California Propositions 9 and 6 this November 4! Propositions 9 would take away basic prisoner rights and lead to further overcrowding, while Proposition 6 would further criminalize youth, especially youth of color, and take needed funds from community programs.Proposition 9 would change the standard length of parole denials for term-to-life prisoners from 1-5 years to an unbelievable 15 years, taking away prisoners’ right to demonstrate their suitability for release. It would also expand the many existing rights of victims in regards to parole and parole revocation hearings at the expense of basic legal rights of prisoners and prohibit the early release of any prisoners, including elderly and terminally ill prisoners, to help relieve the dangerous and inhumane conditions created by overcrowding in California state prisons. Proposition 6 would take ONE BILLION dollars each year from the general fund which funds essential public services such as schools and fire protection. This dangerous initiative would lower the age that youth charged with a “gang related” crime can be handed over to adult courts to 14 years old, locking up more youth for longer sentences, and would take federal money meant for drug treatment and youth alternative programs and put it into county probation departments. Proposition 6 would create over 40 new crimes and increase sentences, including making the sentence for adults AND youth convicted of car-jacking a LIFE SENTENCE.
